Moving means rummaging in all the stuff you don't use every day. And sometimes there are still surprises, even if you know the stuff you are putting into your cabinets.
When we did the dining room last week we noticed that the dinnerware urgently had to be polished. It looked really pitiful. So, after removing all the Christmas decoration today, Anna and I started to polish the dinnerware and candlesticks in the dining room. I've got a set of silver dinnerware once from my Granny Anna, when I was a little girl. Every birthday I got some parts of it, so I am now the proud owner of 6 knifes, 6 big spoons, 6 small spoons, 6 forks and 6 cake forks.
I never used this set apart from very rare occasions long ago: My mother used to set the table with this dinnerware on my birthdays.
When I was a child of about 10 years you can imagine that I was not much interested in this present of my dear granny. She just did what people in her village kept on doing for hundreds of years: Girls got things for their endowment from their very first birthday on, so they could complete their endowment until they were grown up. As I said, I didn't care much for this present. It has been always in a cupboard and was never used.
When we polished it today I noticed it's value (yes, sometimes you must grow old to notice the real value) and it was the first time I fell in love with this pure 60ies design. It is a pity that there are no matching pieces for serving the dishes like a cake shovel, sauce spoon, a ladle and so on. In need of a complete dinnerware for festive occasions I decided to buy these lacking parts instead of another complete set of dinnerware (I had been looking for a set for weeks now). My birthday was a few days ago, so maybe I can take it as another birthday present. And I got everything I needed via internet, although the series hasn't been produced for decades any more. I even got more knifes, forks and spoons, so that the set of dinnerware is complete now for 12 persons plus dinnerware for serving as soon as the postman brings the ordered pieces.
Thank you for this wonderful birthday present, dear Granny! We will use it on every festive occasion from now on and everytime we are using the dining room! Some presents take a bit longer until they are loved. I don't want to imagine how hard it was for my granny paying for such a valuable present! She was not rich. When I saw the prizes for this dinnerware I sat in front of my monitor with open-mouthed amazement. I had such a treasure in my cupboard, but did not realize it. And for me it is valuable in a very special way, because my granny bought this for me with a loving heart.
I love you, Granny.
